The Role

The Department of English and Creative Writing is seeking to appoint an Associate Lecturer in English Literature and Creative Writing. The successful candidate will demonstrate a track-record of delivering engaging teaching in a university environment and will be able to make significant contributions to a dynamic and intellectually vibrant team. The successful candidate will contribute to the Department’s existing teaching portfolio within this field and will have a flexible approach with the ability to deliver a diverse range of undergraduate and postgraduate modules. The successful candidate will teach a diverse range of core and specialist option modules such as: WL11920 Speculative Fiction, EN20120 Literary Theory, EN22920 Literature since the ‘60s ENM3020 Research and Project Planning They will also be expected to contribute to the supervision of undergraduate dissertations and writing projects. The ideal candidate will also be comfortable with a wide range of creative and critical modes of assessment. What you’ll do

This job description is subject to review and amendment in the light of the changing needs of the University, to provide appropriate development opportunities and/or the addition of any other reasonable duties.

The appointed candidate will be required to undertake such duties as shall be reasonably determined by the Head of School of Languages and Literature in light of the operational needs of the academic departments. They will work as part of a busy academic team in a vibrant learning and teaching environment. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will make a full contribution to the Department’s exceptional student experience and although this post is learning and teaching focused the successful candidate will benefit from being embedded in a community-focused research environment. In addition, the successful candidate will receive support and development opportunities appropriate to their career stage designed to foster their success across all areas of academic activity.

The role will involve an exciting blend of activity that will include, but not be limited to:

• Delivering high-quality research-informed teaching at UG and PGT levels.
• Carrying out assessment and administration tasks arising directly from teaching activity and contributing to the day-to-day delivery of an exceptional student experience.
• Undertaking undergraduate supervision as appropriate.
• Undertaking supervision at PGT level as appropriate.
• Supporting recruitment activities such as Applicant Visiting Days, Open Days, and Summer School activity.
• A commitment to appropriate personal and professional development opportunities and engagement with the University’s Effective Contribution Scheme.
• Any other reasonable duties requested commensurate with the grade of this role.

Who you are – Qualifications, Experience, Knowledge and Skills required

Essential 

• A PhD in a relevant area of specialism (i.e. English Literature and/or Creative Writing)
• Experience of teaching in higher education.
• A demonstrable commitment to scholarship in relevant subject areas.
• A broad understanding of literary studies and specialist knowledge in an area relevant to the department’s current teaching programmes.
• A broad understanding of creative practice and specialist knowledge in an area relevant to the department’s current teaching programmes.
• The ability to work effectively in a team and make a positive contribution to a dynamic student-focused learning environment.
• A demonstrable commitment to Continuing Professional Development
• An understanding of the bilingual nature of the University and an awareness of the procedures in place to support working bilingually.

 

Desirable 

• A completed qualification relevant to teaching in Higher education (PGCtHE or similar).
• A demonstrable commitment to delivering research-informed teaching in a higher education setting.
• A publication record in a relevant field (this can include evidence of publication(s) under contract).
• Experience of teaching literary theory at undergraduate level
• Experience of teaching genre fiction and/or poetry at undergraduate level
• Oral (spoken) and Written Welsh Level A1.*
